So today, despite all the bad things going on in tech, two wonderful things happened. I found my Echo PC synth and, after seven (7) years of searching, I found my cord for the Keynote Voicecard synth. I have to Keynote laptops, the modified Toshiba kind. The one has a broken port/socket/etc so I can't plug the cord into it, so I'm using it with JAWS for dos and the Echo. That one has some old files and games on it. The other is a spare that I've never really used. It's using Vocaleyes with the Keynote Gold voicecard. But when I turn on the first one, JAWS announces itself and the C prompt and then stays silent when I hit keys. After a few seconds, the computer starts beeping at me. I don't know what it says on the screen, but Mom said both laptops gave an error message about diskcheck and told me to hit f1. I did then exited without saving. After that, they both seemed to start up normally. I did have Vocaleyes on the first machine but it's set to use the Keynote Gold synth. I'm wondering if that's causing the problem cause the other laptop works perfectly. How can I delete VE from there if it's locking up? Is there a way for me to change the autoexec.bat file so it doesn't try to start up, if that's actually what it's doing? What about having Vocaleyes work with the Echo PC? I don't have the disk but can I copy the files in the Speech directory and use them or would it just copy the ones needed for the Keynote synth, since that's what was installed? Maybe, it's JAWS. If so, I'm just gonna reinstall it. I guess I'll know when Mom reads the screen tomorrow. Perhaps, if the socket is on the Voicecard itself, I can just switch the card or install my spare, assuming I can find it.
Not my airia of expertese but since they seem to be fairly normal laptops, here goes:
The disk check error is probably due to a dead cmos battery - not the one your thinking of, this will be connected to the motherboard and should be replaceable - is the date & time wrong to?
Autoexec.bat is just a standard batch file, so you should be able to open it up in a simple text editor and add / remove commands.
Good call! *smile* I just checked the working laptop which had the same problem and the date and time are wrong. But that still doesn't explain why this one is working and why the other one locks up and beeps. Now I've gotta remember how to set it so it reads 2009. I've done it before but forget the exact specifics.
